Name:
The St. Petka Orthodox Church
Country:
Bulgaria
Date:
1888-1890
The relief is located in:
Plovdiv - Bulgaria

The St. Petka Church was built after the Liberation of Bulgaria from the Turkish yoke. On 22nd July 1881 the City Council of Plovdiv decided to donate to the Plovdiv metropolis a building plot for an orthodox church in the new neighborhood.
On 29th April 1888 the foundation stone was laid in the presence of the city Mayor Peter Kanazirski, the Charge D'Affair ad Interim of the Plovdiv Eparchy Archpriest Parvan Stoev, the Chairman of the Church Board of St. Petka priest Mihail Milkov and many citizens. The building of the church has continued until 1890.
During this period there are several events which should be marked as more significant for the church history:
On 4th December 1888 on the occasion of the transfer and the burial of St. Antimins in the church the first holy mass was said.
On 5th September 1889 in the St. Petka church with the participation of all clergymen form Plovdiv the first requiem was served for Zahari Stoyanov who has died on 2nd September in the same year.
On 16the April 1890 the church was visited and worshiped at by Prince Ferdinand and his mother - Princess Clementina.
The St. Petka Church was sanctified on 26 October 1890 by Levkiiskii bishop Gevrasii.
The Church was painted by Peter Djamdjiev in 1950.
Besides the central throne in the church altar there are two more thrones - one throne of St. Martyrs Sofia, Viara, Nadejda and Lyubov (Sofia, Faith, Hope and Love), whose memory is commemorated on 17th September and another throne - of St. Non-avaricious and wonder workers Kozma and Damyan (1st November), which was sanctified by Patriarch Cyril on 14th November 1963.

Note: The Church was built in honor of St. Petka Reverent of Bulgaria, called also of Epivat. She was born in II century in Epivat from Bulgarian parents and her relics today are in the city of Yash in Romania. Her memory is commemorated on 14 October in contrast to another two saints with the same names: St. Martyr Paraskeva who has lived in II - III century in Ikonia, Asia Minor and her memory is commemorated on 28th October and St. Reverent Martyr Paraskeva who has lived in II century in Rome and her memory is commemorated on 26th July.

Special Thanks to Museo Omero of Ancona (Italy) for the authorization to use the learning materials concerning this project.
